Guilderland retiree Steve Zahurak with Kathy Pelham of the United Way.

From parenting programs for teens to anti-violence initiatives in schools, the United Way does great things in our communities. So when New York State United Teachers approached Steve Zahurak to participate in the United Way's Loaned Executive program, his answer was "yes."

"I get a lot of satisfaction knowing I'm helping the community," said Zahurak, a retiree from the Guilderland Teachers Association in Albany County. During the United Way's September-through-November campaign, Zahurak gave presentations encouraging employees at businesses to contribute.

Under the program, employers provide full- or part-time employee volunteers for the United Way's annual campaign. For info, contact United Way of New York state at (518) 463-2522 or e-mail
